Monday was the start of workouts for local high school football teams. Coach Josh Smalley of the Orangefield Bobcats says the first day went pretty good. Smalley adds the Bobcats have lost some leadership with three year starters Matthew Watkins, Austin Moore, and Brandon Bray graduating so Orangefield will need some new kids to step up as team leaders.
The Bobcats made the playoffs last season and will use the same offense and defense again this season. Coach Smalley believes there will not be a lot of re-teaching needed to get the players familiar with the two schemes, but there are some new coaches. Dan Welch takes over as the Offensive Coordinator coming to Orangefield from Vidor which runs a similar offense to the Bobcats. Tim Erickson will handle the offensive line and Tony Bradley will be in charge of the running backs.
With the heat of summer at its most intense conditioning and caution are important factors for the workouts. Smalley states for the most part the players have come to the workouts in good shape. Water is readily available for the players during the hot regimen of getting ready for the start of the season. Also, to help the practices roll a little smoother music is played during the workouts. The season opener on August 26 for the Orangefield Bobcats is against the Buna Cougars.
