Giddings 7 24 14 0- 45
Orangefield 0 7 0 6- 13
The Orangefield Bobcats were hoping to advance to the third round of the playoffs for the first time in the school’s history. Unfortunately, the Bobcats were buffaloed by the undefeated Giddings Buffaloes 45-13 Friday night at Pearland Stadium.
Scoring on its first seven possessions Giddings (12-0) used a backup quarterback for the first half when the Buffaloes built up a 31-7 lead. Orangefield (6-6) was frustrated with its Slot T running game being stalled by a big Giddings defense so much so that the Bobcats resorted to nine passes in the game resulting in both of the team’s scoring plays.
Junior Chabastin Taylor started for the Buffaloes because an injury to Kyle Jones kept him on the sideline. Taylor moved from his wide receiver position last week and in two weeks has led Giddings to back-to-back playoff wins. He carried the ball 14 times in the first half for 105 yards and the first Buffaloes’ touchdown on the night. Taylor was 5 of 8 passing for 66 yards and one touchdown.
The Bobcats’ quarterback Matthew Watkins played a strong game producing 66 yards on 21 carries. He was the leading rusher for Orangefield and had more than half of Orangefield’s total yards in the first half with 72 rushing and passing yards when the Bobcats only totaled 102. The second half did see Orangefield do a little better on the ground with 103 yards compared to 88 in the first.
The two Orangefield touchdown drives came at the end of the two halves. A penalty on the kickoff by Giddings with the score 28-0 gave the Bobcats the ball at the Buffaloes’ 48. The Bobcats completed two passes the first for 10 yards to Hunter Evans which setup a first down run by Watkins. Christopher McGee had two carries for 17 yards and Watkins broke one for 16 yards to give Orangefield a first and goal at the four. On second down Watkins found Wesley Frillou in the right corner of the end zone for the touchdown. Matthew Rainey’s kick made it 28-7 with just 2:25 remaining in the half.
Giddings was still able to drive to a first and goal in the remaining time. Chris Orocio kicked a 25-yard field goal to close out the first half scoring to put the Buffaloes up 31-7.
Two quick touchdowns by the Buffaloes in the third quarter pushed the advantage to 45-7. Orangefield took the ball with 5:50 to play in the fourth quarter and used 11 running plays to move to a first-and-goal with just seconds remaining in the game. It was second down again when Watkins threw into the end zone. The pass was deflected by at least one Buffalo, but the ball took a fortuitous carom and landed in the hands of Zach Dischler for the touchdown with just 14 seconds left to play. The kick failed leaving the final score at 45-13.
Giddings will take its perfect record to the Regional Semifinals next week when it plays Bellville.
