The Orangefield Bobcats smashed the Buna Cougars 35-6 Thursday night at F. L. McClain Stadium and now turn their attention to the playoffs beginning next week.
Orangefield jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead following a six play drive that covered 61 yards in three minutes and was capped off by a 7-yard touchdown run by Kyler Green, who was starting in place of injured running back Mason Manning.
Quarterback Carson Gonzales, who has had a sensational season for the Bobcats, was injured on a pass attempt on the drive and did not return the rest of the night.
Later in the first quarter, quarterback Hunter Reeves, now in the game in place of Gonzales, took charge of the offense and quickly guided the Bobcats to another score. The drive covered 54 yards in four plays and resulted in a Reeves 7-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Bobcats defender Kyran Morrow intercepted Buna quarterback Brody Moss on the next Cougars possession to give Orangefield possession at the 49 yard line. Reeves then found Kaleb Menard streaking down the middle for a 51-yard catch and run for a touchdown to put Orangefield ahead 21-0 early in the second quarter.
Orangefield would add another touchdown, this time a 4-yard score by Green, right before halftime to give the Bobcats a 28-0 advantage at the break.
Reeves commanded the offense well and guided the Bobcats to a touchdown on its first possession of the third quarter, this time covering 40 yards in eight plays, while chewing up four minutes of game clock. Reeves scored on a 2-yard run and a 35-0 lead with 4:33 left in the third.
Buna would finally reach the end zone with just 0:53 seconds remaining in the game as Moss threw a 43-yard touchdown pass for the final score.
The Bobcats generated 300 yards of offense on the night, while limiting the Cougars to 170 yards for the game.
Orangefield (8-2) will represent District 10-3A Division 1 as the No. 2 seed and will face the No. 3 seed from District 9-3A, which will be determined after Fridays games, in the bi-district round. The time, date and location of the game are still to be determined as well.
