The Deweyville Pirates are putting the last two weeks against state ranked teams behind them. Coach Lance Dale says the emphasis with the players will be the next two weeks for Deweyville. The Pirates have a few bumps and bruises, but no serious injuries entering these two pivotal games. Dale states, “It’s coming down to in these next two weeks we need to get us a win each week to get into the playoffs, but our team’s mentally ready to do it.”
First up are the West Hardin Oilers. Coach Dale indicates the Oilers’ offense is led by quarterback Tyler Snead who is more of a runner than a passer. Out of the Spread Formation the Oilers run a Pistol Set with Snead the primary ball carrier. He will hand the ball off to running back Jay Hughes as well. Dale analyzes, “They basically try to spread you out to run the ball.”
West Hardin is based out of a 50 Defense, but the Oilers are pretty young on defense starting four freshmen. Coach Dale believes the Oilers will mature and have their best player defensive tackle Collin Chesson to rally around. “They’re a scrappy group of players, but they should have a bright future ahead if they keep playing,” Dale predicts.
Making the playoffs has been the goal for Deweyville all season and the next two weeks will determine if the Pirates are going to the post season. Dale emphasizes the significance of this game is huge. He provides the keys for a Pirate win this week against the Oilers. The Pirates need to carry out their assignments, get their blocks, have some good runs, throw the ball to the open people, and make tackles on defense. Dale forecasts Deweyville should win the game if the Pirates do their jobs.
Deweyville plays at West Hardin Friday night. The Pirates and Oilers kick off this important district game at 7:00 PM.
