There’s a saying that things come back in style in 20 years. If that’s true the Little Cypress-Mauriceville baseball team should be styling back to Austin for the State Tournament.
It was 20 years ago almost to the day when the Bears reached the State Tournament for the first, and so far, only time in school history. The Bears finished 32-4 that season, reaching the final where they were defeated by Fort Worth Arlington Heights. The team was lead by the right arm of Beau Hale, and he had a pretty good supporting cast. Sean Seago, Charlie Nichols, Brad Duhon, Jeremy Green, Anthony Bandiero, Jeremy Smith, Kevin McKnight, Jon Weidner, and Matthew and Marshall DeBlanc all played major roles in the Bears success under a young head coach in his fourth season, Steve Griffith.
Anyone that has followed this years Bear team, now knows how hard it is to advance in the playoffs week after week. Scheduling, travel, prom, finals, graduation, weather are all a part of it. And lets not forget pitching, hitting, catching, throwing and Lady Luck.
After a 12 year absence the Bears are back in the Region Final. It’s the sixth time under Coach Griff’s guidance that the Bears have reached this round. The team will face the Robinson Rockets in a best of three series, currently scheduled for Thursday at 7:30 and Friday at 5pm on KOGT.
“These guys don’t quit,” Griffith said. “they didn’t quit when we were down during district, they didn’t quit against Huffman, and they didn’t quit against Jasper. We know Robinson is a good team, but we’re peaking at the right time.”
Will the 2016 Bears be the sixth team to reach the Region Final or the second team to reach the State Tournament?
