The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears are going back to the playoffs. The Bears clinched a berth in the post season last week with a decisive win over Cleveland. Coach Randy Crouch believes LC-M is playing its best football of the season. Crouch confesses he cannot say enough about the players bouncing back when things looked kind of grim three weeks ago. The coaching staff has done a tremendous job too. “I think we’re playing better at this time of the year which is real important,” Crouch exclaims.
The Bears have a key final district game this Friday against the Navasota Rattlers. Crouch points to Navasota quarterback Jeb Malek as the key to the Rattlers’ Spread offense. Malek is an accurate passer and spreads the ball around, but his primary target is Eric Lattimore who is the leading receiver in the district. The Rattlers also have a dangerous back in Keyondrick Philio to run the ball. Crouch states Navasota stretches the field vertically and horizontally so the Bears will have to be prepared.
LC-M had a big game passing the ball in the win over Cleveland. Coach Crouch indicates the Bears will need another solid performance on offense against Navasota. The Rattlers have an outstanding secondary according to Crouch. They are an even front team basing out of the 4-3 on defense. The coach is impressed with the way the Rattlers maintain their gap control and their responsibilities on defense. Crouch admits, “We are going to have to work extremely hard this week and make sure we have our assignments down.”
The winner of the game Friday night will earn the third seed in the district. Crouch says he is counting on a strong effort from the Bears in this final game before the playoffs. He gives the offensive line credit for showing improvement and quarterback Beau Bickham has thrown the ball extremely well in the last two district wins. Defensively LC-M has done a good job of stopping the opposition the last two weeks when they have ball in the Bears’ territory. Coach Crouch is encouraged with the progress the Bears are making. “We’ve got to really be sharp this week against an outstanding team,” Crouch concludes.
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears make the long road trip to Navasota to play the Rattlers Friday night. The kickoff will be at 7:00 PM.
