The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears will travel to West Orange-Stark Friday in the KOGT Game of the Week. The Bears are hoping the third time is the charm. The Mustangs are hoping to build off of last week’s win over Nederland and show their fan base that they are back.
LCM Coach Eric Peevey has come close but has yet to beat the Mustangs, losing 39-20 in his first year playing Cornel Thompson’s Mustangs. Then last year it was a 38-32 thriller from Coach Hiawatha Hickman’s squad.
Both teams had different quarterbacks a year ago. This year’s Orange Bowl will feature Marcus Turner for WOS and Dylan Payne for the Bears.
“He (Payne) did a good job,” Hickman said after watching video of the Bears’ 42-7 win over Hardin-Jefferson. “They have a big front so they were able to run the ball a lot against H-J. We’re hoping to make him throw a little more by putting them in long situations.”
Payne finished with 95 yards passing as he completed seven passes on 16 attempts with a TD pass to Keagan Cockerham. He added 93 yards rushing and scored two more times.
“Turner put the team on his back the second half,” Peevey said as the Mustangs came back from two scores down to beat Nederland 40-34. “He was impressive and we’ll have to try and slow him down. I was real happy with our defense last week as we held HJ to 100 yards and stopped them twice inside the 20. Hopefully we can continue that Friday.”
Turner rushed for 212 yds. and three touchdowns, and he threw for 131 yds. and two scores. Both TD’s in the air were to Nicholas Crosson. One for 41 yds. and the other for 31 yds.
The Bears are young, starting just three seniors along with 11 juniors and seven sophomores. The Mustangs return seven on offense and four on defense. Both coaches said they expect to see the same starters this week as they did a week ago.
