The state ranked Woodville Eagles gave solid evidence for their being a favorite in Class 3-A on Friday night. Eagles defeated the Class 4-A Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears 40-8 at Eagle Stadium in Woodville.
After the two teams exchanged punts to start the game Woodville began a punching running attack that LC-M just could not stop. On their second possession the Eagles used nine running plays to drive 80 yards for the first score of the game. Quarterback Reese Shaw fumbled the snap on his first attempt and snuck the football over on his second try to give Woodville a 7-0 lead after the point after by Tyler Greer with 3:21 to play in the first quarter.
The Eagles on their next possession broke a long run by Da’Michael Brooks for a touchdown, but Shaw was guilty of a meaningless block in the back to wipe out the touchdown. That only delayed Woodville putting points on the board as four plays later Zach Martin scored on a 9-yard run a minute 1:05 into the second quarter.
The next scoring drive needed only five plays. Martin swept the right end and then broke down the Woodville sidelines to go 72 yards for the touchdown. The kick was missed leaving the score 20-0 in favor of Woodville.
The home team tacked seven more points on the board before halftime on its next possession. The Eagles marched 68 yards in seven plays. Martin reached the end zone for a third time once again covering 9 yards. Greer’s point after made it 27-0 with two minutes left in the first half.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville managed just three first downs in the opening half. The Bears had 21 plays for minus 20 yards. They completed one of seven passes for just one yard.
Woodville scored on two more long drives in the second half. Da’Michael Brooks cut loose on a 62-yard run in the third quarter. Jaqualin George ran 9 yards on the eleventh play of a 75-yard drive to put the Eagles up 40-0 with 10:09 left in the fourth quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff LC-M’s Darien Williams took the ball after big bounce, cut to his right, and then sped down the sideline for a 77-yard return to put the Bears on the scoreboard. The Bears faked the point-after and holder Ethan McCollum ran it in just inside the right pylon for the two points.
On the conversion Woodville’s Tyler Greer was severely injured trying to make the tackle on McCollum. An ambulance was brought onto the adjacent track to give him first aid. After several minutes the game was called and both teams gathered in the far end zone from where Greer was injured. A helicopter brought Greer to Texas Children’s Hospital. He was later released with a concussion.
Next week the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears play at home against the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. Woodville travels to Madisonville.
