The LCM Bears lost a tough overtime game to the Huffman Falcons Friday 27-20.
The Bears offense sputtered as they were shutout in the first half (Huffman 6-0) and it didn’t help that they lost two way starter Chris Winters in the second quarter after he was ejected for a “targeting” call which is hitting a defenseless player.
In the third quarter following a fumbled punt by the Falcons, Bears QB Ethan McCollum ran 27 yards for a score but the point after was blocked keeping the score at six all. LCM got the ball back with 31 seconds in the third and McCollum hit Katon Brown with a 66 yd. TD pass. McCollum scored on a two point conversion to make it 14-6 and it appeared the Bears were headed in the right direction after a slow start.
But on the next two drives, Huffman’s defense stole two McCollum passes and returned them for touchdowns and took a 20-14 lead with 4:24 to play. The Bears responded with a nine play drive and a 15 yd. TD run by McCollum but the go ahead point after was missed, and the game was tied at 20.
With 1:20 left in the game, the Falcons marched down the field and had a first and goal at the one. The Bears stopped them on first down, forcing Huffman to try an 18 yard FG for the win with one second left, but Dameon Morris blocked it to send it into overtime.
In OT Huffman had a third and 12 from the 16 and QB Aaron Shively hooked up with Chaseon Rice in the end zone for the go ahead score. LCM was ready to tie the game and send it into a second OT with a second and goal play from the one but McCollum fumbled the snap and recovered it at the 13. He was sacked on fourth down to end the game.
For the game, the Bears (2-1) had 380 yards of offense and the Falcons (1-2) put up 164. LCM travels to Cleveland on Friday.
