The football team at Little Cypress-Mauriceville is still a work in progress. Coach Randy Crouch is seeing improvement in his young Bears. He said the level of play by the Bears went up against a very good Jasper team.
Naturally, the level is not where Crouch and the LC-M coaches want it. The coach is hopeful the Bears can carry the improvement on both sides of the ball into this week’s game. Crouch stated, “I’m very encouraged about their effort and about their toughness which we’ll need every bit of this week.”
The Vidor Pirates are this week’s opponent for LC-M. Crouch analyzed the Pirates’ Slot-T Offense. They are run oriented. Coach Jeff Mathews has used that offense for many years. The Pirates are very good and efficient at executing their ball control offense.
The running backs for the Pirates not only run the ball, they block well according to Crouch. Brad Nunez, Zach Dahlenburg, and Kelby Odom are all returnees in the Vidor backfield. New at quarterback is Gage Galloway to run the Slot-T for Vidor. The Pirates have some big linemen that clear the way for the backs. “We’re going to have to do a very good job getting off blocks to be able to control their offense,” Crouch explained.
Coach Crouch examined the Vidor defense and what the Bears will need to do to move the football against the Pirates. Vidor bases out of the 4-2-5 with an even front line. The Pirates do not give up big plays and their opponents earn every yard.
There are five starters back on defense at Vidor. Joseph Harris is a very good football player and is back as a starter at defensive end. Ian Wooten, Tanner Mitchell, Dayton Claybrook, and Mason Brown were all regulars for the Pirates.
The Pirates play smart and tackle well. Crouch believes, “We’re going to have to take care of the things we can take care of and handle our business as far as execution and moving the ball.”
Coach Crouch would love to see LC-M build on the improvement shown against Jasper.
Friday night is Homecoming for Little Cypress-Mauriceville. The Bears would love to celebrate victory on that special night.
