Homecoming wins are always sweet, district wins are strategic, and wins by seven touchdowns are special. Friday night the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears got all three in a 55-6 victory over the Cleveland Indians at Battlin’ Bear Stadium.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville (3-4, 2-1) used a three-headed monster running game to roll up 482 yards on the ground. Cleveland (0-7, 0-3) remains winless on the season.
The Bears played without their starting quarterback Beau Bickham who was out with a knee injury. His replacement Paul Joubert directed the LC-M offense flawlessly handing the ball off 45 times without a fumble. Joubert’s only pass was for 31 yards and a touchdown to Mitchell Lee to close out the Bears’ scoring late in the first half to give them a 34-6 lead.
Prior to the game beginning Sydney Pierce was named the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Homecoming Queen for 2015. Jeffrey Holland was honored as the Homecoming King also prior to kickoff.
Not counting its final time with the ball in the last 90 seconds of the game the Bears had the football nine times and scored on eight of those possessions without ever punting the ball. LC-M gained over 500 yards of offense and had five different Bears get into the end zone. The running trio of J’Lon Douglas, Sam King, and Chris Winters accounted for six of LC-M’s eight touchdowns and over 400 yards on the ground.
Winters finished just five yards shy of the century mark on ten carries and did have touchdown runs of 35 and 24 yards. Douglas was the game’s leading rusher with 163 yards on 14 carries and tallied three straight Bears’ touchdowns. King went over 100 yards on the first play of the second half when he broke loose on a 50-yard scoring run. He completed the night with 159 yards on nine rushes. Kayne Williams got the final touchdown on a 14-yard run around left end. Williams had 33 yards, while David Webb also came off the bench to rush for 32 yards.
Coming into the contest LC-M Coach Randy Crouch was rightfully concerned about the Indians’ quarterback D. D. Jackson running the Cleveland Spread Offense. Jackson did have 114 yards on 20 carries, but the Bears’ defense allowed him to break just one long run for 29 yards which led to the Indians’ only touchdown and made the score 7-6 with 4:14 to play in the first quarter. Jackson tried to run in the point after, but was stopped by the LC-M defense.
On the night the Bears shutdown the Cleveland passing attack. Jackson completed just two of ten passes for 23 yards. Winters had an interception in the end zone to foil one of the few scoring chances for the Indians.
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears will take their two-game district winning streak to Bridge City next week to play the Cardinals who lost a heart breaker at Jasper 48-47 on Friday night. Cleveland will try for its first win of the season at home against the Huffman Hargrave Falcons.
