This Friday there’s a huge football game between two teams battling for first place. It’s a longtime rivalry but it’s not being played in Jefferson County. It’s being played in Orange County as the Bridge City Cardinals (7-0, 4-0) travel to LCM (5-2, 4-0).
The Bears were the preseason district favorite and the Cardinals are the surprise of the year. LCM (5-2) got off to a slow start but are peaking at the right time with five straight wins. The Cardinals destroyed their first four opponents and have had to battle to win their last three.
Coach Eric Peevey of the Bears and Josh Smalley of the Cards know each other well. They may not admit it but there’s no doubt their respective staffs have worked overtime to prepare for this game. It’ll be up to the players to execute the game plan.
BC comes in averaging 370 yards of offense a game and LCM is at 340. The BC defense only give up 188 yds. per game and through seven games has only given up 84 points. The Bears defense gives up 290 ypg. But in district LCM is a +6 in the turnover department and BC is a 1. The coaches talk about turnover ratio in our interviews below.
This old reporter hasn’t been this excited about a county matchup in a long time. I won’t be surprised if it comes down to the final drive. They’ll even be competition at halftime as two great bands perform after scoring ONES at the Regional contest.
