Bridge City held a public hearing Tuesday evening on the city’s proposed budget and proposed tax rate for next year. There were no comments concerning the budget, but citizen Skipper Nixon spoke against the proposed increase in the city’s tax rate. Nixon said he is retired from the Air Force. He and his wife take care of their two disabled daughters on a fixed income. Insurance for their home and for their vehicles have gone up according to Nixon, but they still pay all their bills every month. The increase in the city’s tax rate he said would make this difficult for his family.
Bridge City is proposing a tax rate of 52 cents per 100 dollars value which is a slight increase over the current tax rate. During its regular meeting following the public hearing, the City Council approved the city’s 2016-2017 budget unanimously. The tax rate is scheduled to be adopted at the City Council meeting on September 20.
City Manager Jerry Jones informed that Bridge City is getting the filters on the city’s water system closer to completion. The technician performing the installation will return to Bridge City in a little over a week, and the filtration should be operational by the beginning of September.
An ordinance was approved for the second time to grant a zoning change for property on Center Street to low density residential which will allow the construction of duplexes at that location. The council also approved a resolution in support of a 100-bed nursing home to be constructed in Bridge City as proposed by the Rhoman Group.
