The district opener between Bridge City and Orangefield lived up to its billing and in the end, it was Cardinal senior Kassidy Wilbur showing why she’s the best player in Southeast Texas.
Wilbur struck out 14 while hitting a two run homer to lead the Lady Cardinals to a 4-2 win over the Bobcats. But the win didn’t come without a fight.
Wilbur, and OF starter Kaylee Ancelot cruised into the fifth inning in a scoreless tie. In the top of the fifth OF shortstop Autumn Frost (below) lead off with a solo shot off Wilbur to take a 1-0 lead. Wilbur then struck out the side to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Chloe Halliburton reached base on an error and Natalie Reed on a fielders choice and they were driven in by Jaylynn Burch to make the score 2-1. The exclamation point came when Wilbur stepped up with two outs and drilled one over the right field fence for a two run homer and a 4-1 lead.
But the Bobcats didn’t go away quietly in the seventh. A lead off homerun by Ancelot cut the lead to 4-2. Kinley Gibson and Frost singled and advanced to second and third with no one out. Then Wilbur bowed up and retired the next three, ending the game with a strikeout.
The two won’t play each other again until the final district game, Friday, April 20th in Orangefield. Next week BC will play Silsbee twice and OF will face HF on Tuesday and Friday. Silsbee beat WOS Thursday 16-0.
