Two outs from victory, the Bridge City Cardinals saw their season come to an end Saturday night in a 6-5 loss to the Robinson Rockets at the University of Houston.
The Cards came out swinging in the first inning scoring three runs on four hits, the biggest being a two run homer by Tod McDowell. But Robinson cut the celebration short by scoring two in the bottom of the first which set the scene for a game where both teams were ready to trade punches.
Robinson would tie the game in the third when Tanner James brought in Zac Boyett with a single. Boyett, the starting pitcher settled down after the first, giving up just one hit in the next three innings.
But in the fifth, Kyle Bergeron walked, they intentionally walked McDowell and Tanner Doiron made them pay with a two run double to give BC at 5-3 lead.
In the sixth, Bergeron walked one and gave up a hit. A sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third and Peyton Powell picked up an RBI on a groundout to second to cut BC’s lead to one.
In the top of the seventh McDowell reached second on an outfield error and he was sacrificed to third. Austin Fitts put the ball in play and the Rockets caught McDowell in a run down and then caught Fitts trying to reach second for the double play to end the inning.
With momentum on their side, Robinson came up in the bottom of the seventh. The first batter grounded to short. The next batter reached first on an error throw at short and the next batter reached on an error after laying down a bunt. With two on James sent one to centerfield, scoring one to tie and the winning run on a play at the plate. Robinson 6 Cardinals 5
