Down by seven at the half the Bridge City Cardinals made a few adjustments and in the second half scored 28 points, 21 in the third quarter, to hand the high flying Falcons their first loss in district and into a second place tie with BC and Silsbee at 3-1. Jasper beat LCM to improve to 4-0.
The two teams combined for almost 1000 yds of offense but it was a defensive play that sealed the win for the Cards. With BC up 41-34 and under two minutes to play, the Falcons made two big plays to set them up first and goal at the one. Four chances to score from the one meant pretty good odds the game would be tied. Huffman QB Cody Gaitan was stopped at the one foot line on first down thanks to an incredible stop by BC’s D. On second down, with Gaitan in shotgun, he fumbled the snap and BC recovered and ran out the clock for the win.
It was a tough way for Gaitan to end the game after an outstanding performance. He was 29-42 for 407 yds and four touchdowns. He had four targets with his number one being Lane Shively who caught 11 balls for 139 yds and two scores.
For BC they rushed for 433 yds with half of that coming from Cayce Draper who rushed 20 times for 204yds and 2 scores. Hunter Denton (pictured) also had a good game with 103 yds on 4 carries and a score. Byron Trahan also had a big play for the Cards. In the fourth quarter holding on to a 34-27 lead, Trahan came off the bench for an injured Camden Dubois at quarterback. And on a 4th and two, Trahan faked the dive and took the ball 30 yds into the end zone.
BC will host Silsbee on Friday.
