The Cardinals were soaring in their opening game of the Bridge City Cardinal Classic holiday tournament. Bridge City scored the first sixteen points in the first quarter Friday morning. The Bridge City Cardinals were able to fly above the Hull-Daisetta Bobcats 74-29.
Scoring for the Cardinals was unbelievably balanced. Bridge City suited out eleven players for the game, and every Cardinal scored a least two points.
The early surge by Bridge City in the first period started with a basket by Beau Martin. Austin Richardson followed up by hitting two early three-point baskets. Ethan Oceguera and Bryson Constance both added a couple field goals in the first stanza. Hull-Daisetta did not help itself by turning the ball over ten times in the first eight minutes.
The second quarter was a little more competitive, but Bridge City still doubled the Bobcats’ scoring in that period 18-9. Richardson tallied two more buckets from beyond the arch. Braydon Little chalked up four points including two free throws in the second. Martin and Constance nailed two more field goals apiece to help the Cardinals to a 53-25 advantage at the half.
Bridge City appeared to have left their game in the locker room at the start of the second half. The Bobcats scored seven points to open the third quarter. Kobe Madden scored four points and Kole Frauenberger hit a three-pointer to cut the Cardinal lead to 38-18 with three minutes played in the quarter.
Coach Randall Robertson was not happy with the Cardinals’ effort and pulled all five off the court. Noah McFarland got the momentum rolling in the right direction again with a basket and a free throw at 4:40 of the third period. Bridge City outscored Hull-Daisetta 12-7 through the remainder of the third.
The fourth quarter was very nearly a repeat of the first period. The Cardinals got six points from Richardson who finished the game as the high scorer with 18 points. Gabe Castillo nailed a three-pointer which was the eighth three-ball in the game for Bridge City.
Joining Richardson with double figure scoring was Constance who was the only player to score in every quarter ending with 12 points. The Bobcats’ Hayden Whiddon also totaled 12 points in the game.
The Bridge City Cardinal Classic continues through Saturday. Each team will play four games using the gyms at the high school and at the middle school. The complete schedule for the tournament can be found on the Sports page of KOGT.com.
