Garbage pickup was the main order of business for the City Council Tuesday evening in Bridge City. The threat of Tropical Storm Bill caused Republic Services to cancel its garbage pickup on Tuesday. Republic’s Operations Supervisor Brad Burkhalter spoke to the city council about the decision to cancel garbage services for a day. Burkhalter said it was a decision by corporate headquarters of Republic Services to cancel the pickup Tuesday, and he assured the City Council that his crews would work through Saturday if necessary to make sure all the collections are completed in Bridge City. Burkhalter promised that he would work to make sure they won’t have any issues in Bridge City. The issue of missed household garbage pickups was on the agenda as Maxie Neely on Dupuis complained that his garbage had not been picked up four times on Fridays. Neely informed the City Council that missed garbage pickup is bad any day, but especially bad on Friday since the garbage sits out through the weekend and families usually add to the garbage on Saturday and Sunday which often makes it attractive to animals that tear into the garbage bags leaving debris that ends up in the drainage ditches. Burkhalter with Republic Services spoke with Neely and with Gerald Robinson the city’s Public Works Director about the problem and believes changing the driver will fix it. Burkhalter told the City Council that the complaint from Neely was the final straw leading to the driver for the garbage truck on Dupuis being changed and should be the remedy to the problem. The City Council approved Tuesday the contract for McInnis Construction to work on sewer improvements in Bridge City. The $218,690 project is part of a City Development Block Grant to add sewer lines to low income residents in the city. Bids for purchasing properties on Provost and Beverly were approved by the council to get the properties back on the tax rolls. Public Works Director Gerald Robinson gave an update on the splash pad that Bridge City is planning for the area by the Pavilion and the library on West Roundbunch Road. Robinson said he thinks the contract has been signed and there have been some changes including new color coordination so the contractors will back with the new plan before construction starts hopefully before the end of the summer. Robinson said work should be done to install curbs in the Schofield Addition this weekend if the weather cooperates and playground equipment has been installed and is getting plenty of use by kids in the city park.
