Tuesday in Katy, two basketball teams will be making their first ever trips to the 4A State Semifinals as the Bridge City Lady Cardinals take on the Cuero Gobblers at the Merrell Center at 6pm.
So what do we know about Cuero other than being one of the dominant schools in any sport out of Region 4?
The Gobblers are 32-6 and winners of their last 19 straight. They haven’t lost since December 10. They were undefeated District Champions. They were 34-4 last season and lost in the third round to Fredericksburg.
In their playoff wins this year they defeated Carizzo Springs 69-40, Wimberley 58-40, Sinton 56-29, and Navarro 41-23.
Their coach Amy Crain has an impressive resume. She won a State Championship as a player in Victoria and she started as a guard on the USC National Championship team with Cheryl Miller in 1984.
They’re lead by their senior post Arissa Carbonara (#11) who averages 17 points per game and 12 rebounds per contest. Senior Aubrey Bowles (#1) averages 15 ppg and 10 rebounds, and senior Mauryana Dasilva (#22) scores eight per game.
Cuero averages 50 points per game and their defense has only given up more than 40 points six times. And four of those games were losses.
Bridge City (35-3) has a more balanced attack lead by Mia Sterling with 11 points and six rebounds per game. Aubrey Small averages 10, Kennedy Campbell (above), Rylee Hebert and Kaylee Britten 7, and Whitney Cunningham 6 ppg.
The winner will face the Glen Rose Tigers or Lincoln Tigers in the 4A Division Two State Championship at the Alamodome this Friday at 5 p.m.
