Bridge City will be getting some ditches cleared and regraded in the coming months. The City Council on Tuesday awarded Jet Aeration the contract for regrading and reshaping ten roadside ditches. Also approved was cleaning the existing driveway culverts.
City Manager Jerry Jones explained the details on the $266,224.50 project that is connected to a Texas Community Development Block Grant. An additional $32,725 could be used to clean the existing driveway culverts adjacent to the ditches.
Jones said the cleaning of the culverts was not originally part of the grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture, but he added it would not make sense to clean the ditch and not make the culvert clean so the water will flow. “If they don’t allow it then we will use a combination of two things, us doing it plus hiring somebody to do it out of our drainage fund, so we’ll make sure it gets covered,” Jones stated.
A more comprehensive list of ditches to be regraded is still in the works. The final approval on the clearing of those ditches also rest with the Texas Department of Agriculture.
The City Council authorized Bridge City’s participation in regulatory proceedings of Entergy Texas at the Public Utility Commission of Texas this year. Bridge City will join the coalition of municipalities that use an Austin based law firm to review all rate requests from Entergy.
February was proclaimed Fair Housing Month in Bridge City. The council authorized the publication of a Fair Housing Public Service Announcement. A resolution was approved adopting and reaffirming policies and procedures for civil rights, equal opportunity, and fair housing as required by the Texas Community Development Block Grant program in conjunction with Fair Housing Month.
The Student Council Representative on the City Council Keagan Smith was congratulated Tuesday by the members of the council for his being named the Bridge City High School Student of the Month by the Bridge City Chamber of Commerce.
Smith has been the Student Council Representative on the council since the current school year began in August. “It’s been a really good experience for me. I’ve enjoyed getting to see a kind of inside look how local government works. I feel like I’m much more in the know than I used to be. I’ve really enjoyed sitting on the council and getting to form relationships with everybody and learning a lot about my community as a whole,” Smith replied.
Serving on the Student Council at Bridge City High School has also been a privilege for Smith. “Being involved on campus has been really important to me. I like to be someone others can look up to, and I think that by doing Student Council and these other extra-curriculars too I can also leave a kind of legacy that other people will see and hopefully set a standard for what the ideal student should be able to accomplish, what we can do when we set our mind to it,” Smith concluded.
