Bridge City’s Tod McDowell contributed with his bat, his glove, and saved the game with his arm in helping the Cardinals earn a come from behind win over the West Orange-Stark Mustangs Friday night at Ronnie Anderson Park. The victory leaves Bridge City alone in second place a half game out of first.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a two-out solo homerun by McDowell over the left center field fence. It would be Bridge City’s only hit in the first five innings.
West Orange-Stark tied the game in the bottom of the first on a two-out single by Ryan Ragsdale. Jack Dallas was hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second and third base before Ragsdale grounded a ball through the hole between second and first for his team leading sixteenth RBI of the season.
Dallas scored the Mustangs second run to take the lead 2-1 in the third inning. It might have been more. Chad Dallas led off with a single, but pinch runner Ja’Vonn Ross was caught stealing. Jack walked and went to second on an infield single by Ragsdale. Both advanced a base on a passed ball forcing the Bridge City infield to come in. Blake Robinson hit a comebacker to pitcher Tanner Doiron who looked at Dallas on third and then threw out Robinson at first base. Dallas took off for home and beat the throw to the plate sliding in with the go ahead run for West Orange-Stark.
In the fourth inning the Mustangs added another run which might very well have been more except for a controversial call by the umpires. Tre’ Bernard singled to right to start the inning. Kaleb Ramsey hit a dribbler down the third base line that Doiron fielded, but slipped and made the throw sitting down which was not in time allowing Ramsey to reach first safely.
Payton Robertson walked to load the bases with one out. The Cardinals brought the infield in again. Chad Dallas hit a hard grounder in the hole between short and third on which Kyle Bergeron made a great stop at short, but he could not make a throw allowing Bernard to score making it 3-1 and leaving the bases loaded with Mustangs.
Bridge City changed pitchers calling in left fielder Kevin Gordon and moving McDowell from third base to left field. Jack Dallas was the first batter Gordon faced, and Jack hit a drive to deep left field which appeared destined for a grand slam. McDowell went to the fence leaped and made a great catch to rob Dallas of extra bases. The out was deep enough to allow Ramsey to tag up at third and easily score what appeared to be the fourth run for West Orange-Stark. Then confusion reigned. While the Mustangs were celebrating the Cardinals threw the ball in and appealed to the umpire at second base who ruled Robertson had not tagged up before advancing to third resulting in an inning ending double play which negated the run Ramsey would have scored. Mustangs’ Coach Shea Landry protested but to no avail and the inning ended with West Orange-Stark on top by two runs not three.
Robertson pitched into the sixth inning, but gave up singles to Gordon and McDowell to start the inning and was relieved by Jack Dallas. He struck out the first batter he faced. The next batter was Doiron. With runners at first and third Dallas threw a pitch that eluded his brother Chad the catcher. Pinch runner Cade Wheat tried to come home on the wild pitch, but Chad retrieved the ball and threw to Jack just in time to tag Wheat out. McDowell advanced to third base. Another pitch got away and McDowell scored to cut the Mustangs’ lead to 3-2 before Dallas struck out Doiron to end the sixth inning.
In the seventh inning Dallas struck out his third straight batter, but then gave up opposite field singles to Bradley Thibodaux and Riley Harris. Schuylar Thibodaux walked to load the bases. Bergeron also walked to bring in the tying run. Gordon hit a ground ball to shortstop that Robertson tried to start a double play on, but his throw went into right field allowing two runners to score and put Bridge City on top 5-3. Ragsdale relieved and got out of the inning with no more runs, but the damage was done.
The Mustangs threatened in the bottom of the seventh loading the bases after two were out. McDowell was called in from left field to pitch. After walking the first batter he faced to load the bases he got Ramsey to hit a slow roller towards second base that Bradley Thibodaux made a nice play on to retire the side and secure the victory for the Cardinals.
The first place Silsbee Tigers defeated Little Cypress-Mauriceville Friday 6-2 in a makeup of their game that was rained out Tuesday. Other games that were rained out Tuesday will need to be made up and there are games Tuesday and Friday of next week to close out the district action.
