Two men with a Ford pickup truck tried to steal the ATM from the new First State Bank off Interstate 10 early Thursday morning.
Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the cash machine was too heavy and all the thieves could do was tump it over. He also said an ATM theft overnight was reported in Nederland.
The attempted theft at the bank, which is at the interstate intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, was reported at 4:37 a.m. Enmon said detectives are reviewing surveillance video.
The Orange theft was less than 36 hours after a Tuesday night search in Vidor for suspects in a Georgia ATM theft earlier that morning. The suspects were believed to be from Houston.
Houston and Beaumont police were watching for a vehicle with those suspect. They ran away in the dark when a Beaumont officer tried to stop them. Vidor police later said the suspects were believed to have been picked up by another vehicle.
Enmon said he does not know if the two men at the Orange bank were involved in the Vidor search.
Orange has had ATM machines stolen from banks and stores in 2016 and 2017. One in 2016 involved two pickup trucks stolen here. The trucks were used to crash into a convenience store and then haul away the machine. That machine was later found with others in Houston with the cash missing.
