A.J. Martin a resident of the West Orange community passed away on Sunday June 2nd 2024.
Born in Lafayette Louisiana on November 4th 1939 he moved to Texas after serving in the United States Navy. A.J. served 6 years in the Navy, 4 years in the Reserve and 2 years active duty. As a young man his active stint included time aboard the USS Mississinewa (A0-144) during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The USS Mississinewa was a fueler providing fuel to ships that made up the Naval Blockade of Cuba. Later deployments took him to Italy where he visited as many places as he could. Being of Catholic faith one of his favorites was his visit to the Vatican.
A.J drove 18 Wheeler trucks for a living until his retirement. He loved to saltwater fish and before the closing of Roll Over Pass on Boliver, A.J. and long time friend John Bailey would camp out for days and fish. Most recently you might find him and his fishing partner Harold Boutte fishing around the waters of Sabine Lake.
A.J. elected years ago to donate his body at the time of death to Baylor College of Medicine for research and teaching.
A.J. is preceded in death by parents Aristide and Irma Martin and long time friend John Bailey. He is survived by long time friends Pat and Larry Hickman, Harold Boutte, Wayne Wiggins, Rufus and Becky Flurry as well as many others. He also had a special love for his fur babies Shelby and Fred. A.J. never met a stranger and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
