It’s time for the ALL-KOGT Football Team for 2024. It was a good year for Orange County and Deweyville as every varsity team made the postseason. Congratulations to the players and coaches for having successful seasons.
We start with our MVP, WOS QB Marcus Turner. The senior signal caller had an incredible season, throwing for 1800 yds and rushing for another 900 with 26 total touchdowns for the Mustangs. The 9-4A Offensive Player of the Year was also a two time KOGT Player of the Week
Our Offensive Player of the Year is junior running back Mason Manning who won the district rushing title by more than 400 yds. as he rushed for 1783 yds. The 10-3A MVP was also the second leading receiver for the Bobcats with 14 catches as he finished with 27 TD’s on the season. Manning was also a two time KOGT Player of the Week.
LCM LB Tucker Floyd is our Defensive Player of the Year. The district defensive MVP amassed an incredible area leading 136 tackles on the season for the Bears.
Picking our Coach of the Year may have been the hardest choice. We’re very proud of our coaches and staffs for the work they put in this season.
WOS Coach Hiawatha Hickman made some changes before the season and almost won as many games (9-3) as he did in his first two seasons. Deweyville followed their record 10 win season with a 9-2 mark and another district title for Coach Brandon Prouse.
Vidor (5-6) Coach Dwayne Dubois had to deal with some adversity early in the season, but found a way to win his last four to make the playoffs. LCM (8-3) was predicted to win the district and Coach Eric Peevey backed it up by saying they would win the district, and they did after starting the season 0-2.
Jeff Breaux came to Orangefield with no head coaching experience and looking to change the way the Bobcats have done things for more than a decade. Despite a good nucleus the Bobcats started 1-2 and were pointing fingers. But Breaux stayed the course and things started clicking. The Bobcats (8-3) went on a seven game win streak that included an undefeated district title.
Josh Smalley came to Bridge City looking to change the culture of Cardinal football before thinking about winning. The Cards haven’t had a winning season since 2016 and from 2017-2023 won a total of 15 games.
Smalley’s changes saw immediate results. They won their first four games, outscoring their opponents 160-20, and that included beating his former employer. They would win six straight before losing a close one, 21-18, to the district champs. They would finish the season 8-3 and unlike years past, Cardinal fans can’t wait for next season. Josh Smalley is our 2024 Coach of the Year.
Now for the rest of the players on the All-KOGT Team. Thanks to the coaches for their help with stats, etc. Congrats to everyone on the team and we’re looking forward to welcoming back almost two dozen of them next year.
