At approximately 2:45a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to a head-on collision on SH 87 in Newton County. The crash occurred just north of the community of Bleakwood.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling northbound on SH 87. A 1996 Chevrolet passenger vehicle was traveling southbound on SH 87. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck crossed the center diving line and struck the passenger vehicle head-on. Upon impact, the Chevrolet passenger vehicle caught fire and was quickly engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Chevrolet passenger vehicle was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Connie Smith at the crash scene. At this time, the deceased victim has not been identified due to the extent of the fire.
The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck, a 24-year-old male from Kirbyville, was transported by medical helicopter to Christus hospital in Beaumont with serious injuries. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, his name will not be released until the next of kin has been notified.
This crash remains under investigation as DPS Troopers work to positively identify the deceased victim and determine the exact factors that contributed to this fatal crash.
