Traffic on I-10 eastbound was tied up for 18 hours Thursday following a deadly accident in Vinton.
On December 18, 2025, shortly after 1:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 10 East near Louisiana Highway 108. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 60-year-old Gary Poole of Waynesboro, Mississippi.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2022 Freightliner 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound in the right lane of I-10, followed by a 1998 Freightliner 18-wheeler driven by Poole. For reasons still under investigation, Poole’s vehicle struck the rear of the 18-wheeler traveling ahead. Following the impact, the load on Poole’s trailer moved forward into the cab.
Poole sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the 2022 Freightliner did not sustain any injuries.
Standard toxicology samples were collected from all drivers and submitted for analysis.
