The Commissioners Court approved entering into an energy efficiency agreement with Way Company during its meeting Monday afternoon. Way Company based out of Vidor was awarded the agreement over Schneider Electric with offices worldwide because Way is local and would hire local people to work in the program.
The Commissioners discussed the county policy during a workshop Monday morning which allows employees working for the county to voluntarily terminate their employment with the county and then rescind that decision. During the afternoon meeting the Court voted 4 to 1 to amend the policy to make resignations or retirements go into effect and could not be rescinded once the paperwork has been handed to the Human Resource Department. Commissioner John Banken was the lone dissenting vote.
Commissioners were also split on their vote concerning approving a Wellness Incentive Program for county employees. The biggest change for the new program will be a $40 a month surcharge for any county medical program member that does not participate in the wellness program which includes getting certain medical checkups and screenings. Banken and Commissioner Jody Crump were against the new plan.
A second item discussed at the morning workshop of the Commissioners Court was a review of the recommendations of the Reclassification Committee. County Judge Brint Carlton said the final decision on which county employees will be reclassified rests with the Commissioners. Carlton advised that the recommendations of the committee are not final, and the Court will make the decision on which employees will be reclassified. Carlton added it would raise the budget by about $140,000 for the county to implement all of them. Many department heads attended the workshop and were concerned that some of their employees they recommended for reclassification were not considered as needing one by the Reclassification Committee. The Court responded that each member will be open to speak to department heads about their employees before a decision is made during next week’s Commissioners Court meeting.
