The Mustangs played a strong second half last week as West Orange-Stark went into The Reservation and beat the Port Neches-Groves Indians to remain undefeated. Coach Cornel Thompson identifies some Mustangs on the defense that played strong games in the victory. Thompson recognizes both inside linebackers Justin Brown and Steven Tims, tackles Jalen Powdrill and Mandel Turner-King, Jarron Morris off the bench, and the Mustangs’ secondary all stepped forward there last Friday night.
This Friday night the Mustangs renew their rivalry with the Jasper Bulldogs. Coach Thompson believes Jasper may be smarting from a loss to Vidor last week, but he knows what to expect when the Bulldogs come to town. Thompson analyzes the Bulldogs as a typical Jasper football team, big in size with plenty of speed, and the coach predicts another classic West Orange-Stark versus Jasper matchup at Dan R. Hooks come Friday night.
Thompson breaks down the Jasper offense for the big game. The Bulldogs quarterback Tiger Williams may have an injury that could keep him out of the game with the Mustangs, but Coach Thompson points out his replacement Reece Durant is more than adequate. Jasper will use multiple offensive formations, but like Port Neches-Groves last week the Bulldogs will run from the Spread with two running backs and with one running back. They like to run the lead option and run it pretty well according to Thompson. When they throw the football they like to chunk it vertically downfield.
Jasper has a new defensive coordinator and has gone to a 4-3 defense. The Bulldogs swarm the football and use their quickness to pursue quite well. John McMillion at defensive tackle is the preseason selection for outstanding defensive player in District 10-4 Division I. Thompson emphasizes the Bulldogs are athletic, they always have been, and they always will be.
The West Orange-Stark Mustangs grapple with the Jasper Bulldogs Friday night at Dan R. Hooks Stadium and live on KOGT with the kickoff at 7:30.
