On Wednesday, February 11, 2026, Deputy Brent Sonnier with the Newton County Sheriff’s Dept. conducted a traffic stop for a traffic violation on State Highway 12 in Deweyville. During the course of the stop, Deputy Sonnier observed several indicators that led him to believe there was contraband inside the vehicle.
A short time later, Sergeant Chad Ainsworth and K-9 Rhino arrived on scene to assist with the investigation. After receiving consent, Deputy Sonnier conducted a search of the driver and located a substance believed to be methamphetamine.
The driver, James Williams, was placed under arrest and transported to the Newton County Jail, where he was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance.
