Tommy was born and spent some of his childhood growing up in Port Arthur. His parents moved to Bridge City where he graduated high school. He met and married his high school sweetheart, Ange. Tommy attended Lamar State College, graduating with a degree in Chemistry. He and Ange then moved to Denton, where he attended North Texas State College. Upon completion of postgraduate studies in chemistry, they moved back to Southeast Texas. They began raising a family and became very active in the community and their church. Tommy was active as a board member of Bridge City ISD schools. He and Ange were both very active in St. Paul United Methodist youth ministries. He began his professional career in the petrochemical and water quality and water conservation industry. His working career was completed on his retirement as General Manager of Lower Neches Valley Authority. Retirement led to an all-out earnest passion for growing roses. He loved to talk about roses with anyone who would listen and wanted to learn.
Tommy had a passion for beautiful roses. He was a long-time member of the Golden Triangle Rose Society. That led to many friendships and travels with his “rose buddies”. He became a Master Rosarian which led to many awards and recognition. He also became a rose hybridizer, creating, naming and registering roses from his own hands and God’s earth. His “hybrid babies” as he called them were given names of beloved family members. He planted roses at home, in his church gardens and in community gardens. He believed in “grow ’em and show ’em.” He and Ange loved to share their roses, displaying them and donating them whenever they could. A regular Saturday afternoon ritual at home involved cutting, arranging roses in vases and then bringing them to church for display in the sanctuary. Everyone knew of Tommy and Ange’s roses. They were also lovingly delivered to homes and hospital rooms. Ange loved to arrange and donate Tommy’s beautiful roses.
Tommy’s legacy of love of God and family and this earth remain to this day and always will. His memory is honored in the many things he created and cultivated with his hands and heart. His smile and laugh will forever last in many hearts. He was our Daddy and our Poppy.
Tommy was blessed to have been loved and cared for by angels here on earth. Special love and thanks to “our Sherrie” for assurance that he would be taken care of. Thanks to Cassandra, Pat and caregivers at Oakridge Assisted Living. Very special love and thanks to Susan for being there until his last breath. In the last years of his life, memories faded and were lost. The one constant that was never lost was the goodness that was Tommy Hebert.
