Orangefield vs Diboll on paper didn’t look like it was going to be much of a game. But as a coach once said, “That’s why we don’t play on paper.”
Diboll (4-7) set the tone early with a touchdown on the opening drive and the Bobcats followed with a quick three and out.
The Bobcats got the ball back but turned it over on an interception and the Lumberjacks turned that into a TD and a 14-0 lead.
Orangefield would then get a spark from freshman Kaysen Click who took the kickoff 85 yards for a score to cut the lead in half. After a missed field goal by Diboll the Bobcats drove down and Mason Manning punched it in to tie.
Diboll still had time left in the half and drove down the field near the red zone, but with 30 seconds left it was Click intercepting a pass to keep the game tied at the half.
Click wasn’t done. In the third he took the ball on a sweep play and threw a long pass to an open Manning that would set up an end around by Kyran Morrow and give OF their first lead at 21-14.
Diboll fought back and drove the ball downfield. They scored right at the two minute warning but had trouble with the point after. The Bobcats stuffed it and held a one point lead.
Diboll would attempt an onside kick but Rylan Agerton had other plans. Instead of falling on the ball he picked up the kick and took it to the house for a 27-20 lead. OF would seal the victory with a two-point conversion, and win 29-20.
“It wasn’t pretty but that’s playoff football,” Head Coach Jeff Breaux told KOGT after the game. “Diboll is better than their record and we knew that. The offense didn’t have its best game and the defense picked up the slack and our special teams came through with some big plays and it was just fun to watch our guys fight and fly around all night.”
Orangefield will play number one ranked Franklin on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shenandoah.
