James Long, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, surrounded by those who loved him. Known for his boundless energy, generosity, and zest for life, James touched the hearts of everyone he met and left a legacy of kindness and adventure.
Born on September 2, 1955, in Orange, Texas, to B.L. “Sonny” and Jean Long, James grew up in a close-knit family that nurtured his love for sports and community. He graduated as a proud West Orange Chief in 1974, excelling as a multi-sport athlete, both a formidable football lineman and a skilled baseball catcher. His dedication on the field reflected his approach to life: always striving for excellence and inspiring those around him.
James attended Tulane University on both football and baseball scholarships, making history by playing in the very first college football game held in the Superdome. After college, he returned to Orange and began his career as a construction estimator. It was during this time that he married Betty (Begnaud), and together they welcomed two sons, Aaron and Timothy. Though their paths later diverged, James looked back with gratitude for the family and memories they created together.
A true entrepreneur at heart, James founded several companies providing industrial chemical tank cleaning and crane services. After retiring from that industry, he embarked on a new chapter in home security, where he led sales teams, trained call centers across the country, and mentored many. James was always the first to lend a hand, and his infectious smile could light up any room.
In 2005, James married Leah (Anderson), and together they built a joyful life in Lago Vista. He cherished their days spent on the lake, power boating, taking golf cart rides, fishing, watching sunsets, and gathering with family and friends. These moments brought him immense happiness and reflected his passion for love, life, the outdoors, and togetherness.
James is survived by his loving wife Leah; his sons Aaron and his wife Tabitha and Timothy and his wife Danika; his treasured grandchildren Brody and Emma; his sisters Sue and husband Keith Freeman and Rebecca and husband Jim Richard; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sonny and Jean Long; his brother, Dale Long; and his nephew, Brandon Anderson.
A celebration of James’ life will be held on November 22, 2025, at McDonald Memorial Baptist Church in Orange, Texas. Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service and reception at the church.
James’ adventurous spirit, unwavering support, and genuine kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the stories shared and the lives he enriched. May his memory continue to inspire love, laughter, and generosity in us all.
