On Thursday, September 18, 2025, at approximately 6:59 p.m., Deputy Brent Sonnier was on patrol near the intersection of County Road 4181 and State Highway 12 in Deweyville when he conducted a traffic stop on a 2003 Ford Explorer for expired registration.
While speaking with the driver, Deputy Sonnier observed several indicators of possible criminal activity. He requested that the driver, identified as Scott Jared Statum, exit the vehicle to further the investigation. As Statum exited, he dropped two clear plastic baggies containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine.
Statum was immediately placed under arrest and transported to the Newton County Jail. The preliminary field weight of the suspected methamphetamine was 6.13 grams.
