It was an emotional afternoon for Dr. Tom Johnson as he came back to Lamar State College Orange one last time for his retirement celebration.
The former President retired earlier this year after seven years at the school. His title is now President Emeritus as Dr Wendy Elmore assumes the President’s duties.
“It goes to show you’ve hired some quality people,” said former TSUS Regent David Montagne, one of the five speakers during the event. “We didn’t have to have a search committee because Dr. Elmore was prepared for the position.”
Johnson concurred, “My dad taught me to hire good people and get the hell out of the way. And we’ve got good people here at LSCO.”
Mayor Larry Spears, Commissioner Johnny Trahan, Elmore and LU President Dr. Jaime Taylor also spoke. Gary Stelly was the emcee.
Johnson was showered with some impressive gifts and a visit from Gator Country’s “TJ” that was named after him. Johnson’s tenure included giving the school a mascot, which is named Tilley.
