
Born in Orange, Texas, on a winter’s day in 1939, Bernice Plunkett entered the world with a quiet strength and a heart full of devotion. She was the beloved daughter of Wesley Singleton and Ethel Killian Cox, and from the very beginning, her life was marked by deep family roots and enduring love.
Bernice was preceded in death by her cherished parents, her devoted husband of 66 years, John “Smokey” Plunkett, her beloved daughter Helen Barnard, her siblings Thelma Plant, John Singleton, and Mertie Singleton and her daughter-in-law Shelley Plunkett. Though her absence leaves a tender ache, their memories remain etched in the hearts of those who continue her legacy.
Bernice is lovingly survived by her children, Melvin Plunkett and wife Rhonda of Hartburg, Sherlon Jones and husband Jerry of Bridge City, and Lee Plunkett of Orange.
Her life was richly blessed with grandchildren who brought her joy and pride, Stephanie Bass of Bridge City, Gregg Bass of Hartburg, Melissa Henry of Orangefield, Abby Koushan (and husband Lee) of Orange, Steven Bruce (and wife April) of Spring, Amanda Addison (and husband Jason) of Orangefield, Brandy Farr (and husband Chris) of Buna, Eric Plunkett (and wife Samantha) of Orange, Wyatt Plunkett of Houston, Scarlett Plunkett of San Antonio.
Bernice’s legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Colby, Olivia, Asher, Ian, Kolte, Hunter, James, Euan, Harley, Noah, Ella, Karson, Caleb, Arwen, and Maverick.
And through her great-great grandchildren, Carter, Ava, and Rhett.
Bernice’s greatest treasure was her family, and she poured her love into each generation with unwavering devotion and gentle wisdom.
Bernice and Smokey were united in marriage on March 4, 1956, beginning a journey of love and partnership that spanned more than six decades. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, resilience, and the kind of love that endures beyond time.
Pallbearers honoring Bernice’s memory include Steven Bruce, Eric Plunkett, Colby Trahan, Gregg Bass, Lee Koushan, and Jason Addison.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Ashley, whose compassionate care and kindness brought comfort to Bernice’s final days.
