Celebrated a birthday this week. Thank you to everyone who reached out. So I’m at the phase where the birthday cards have gone from “You’re living your best life!” to something with an old man and a cane.
“I know it’s tough celebrating birthdays as you get older. The good news is, you don’t have many left!”
Then the question, “You’re so old, can name something that was invented after you were born and now it is no longer relevant.” First thing that came to mind for me was the cassette player.

Coach Mark Foreman was my guest on my Behind The Mic podcast. He was coming to town to visit family and called to say he was available. Turns out coach was once again in the right place at the right time because my scheduled guest had a change of plans. What’s funny was I stopped myself from telling you Juicers who it was last week but I didn’t want to jinx myself. Happened anyway. Thanks coach for coming by. You can check it out here.

Speaking of interviews (and being old), the 50th Anniversary of the movie “Jaws” was last week and one of the networks decided to run the original and yes, I watched since I was stuck at home. I always liked the part where Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfus are on the boat sharing the stories of their scars and then start singing the old sea shanty “Spanish Ladies.” “Farewell and adieu to you, Spanish Ladies, Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Spain.” When they pull the camera back and show the boat in the water, there’s a shooting star going through the sky. Always wondered if that was a case of perfect timing or Steven Spielberg put it in there. If any of you know him, hook me up and let’s get him on BTM!

Another round of congratulations to the 12U OYBS All-Stars who won the USA Softball State Championship last week. If I remember correctly two years ago when the 8U All-Stars won the title, they were the first ever OYBS team to win it all and now the league has done it again. I have to think that guys like head coach AP Castino, Ryan Crowell, Luke McFarlane, Cody Caples and many others are having an impact on a league that was in pretty bad shape not too long ago. Congratulations to all of those parents and volunteers who have shown a commitment to improve league ball.

While we’re handing out attaboys let me throw out a few more. First to Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard and Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard. The father/son duo said when they were sworn in January 1, they would hit the ground running. As a member of the media I’ve heard that one a thousand times. But seven months in and they’re still running and their cooperation has been top notch. Also we hate to see Chief Rod Carroll leave Vidor but we understand and wish him the best over in Nederland.

Are we not surprised that the Detroit Tigers were the first MLB team to reach 50 wins this season? Former Astros manager AJ Hinch has the team that people forgot about, relevant again. I’m sure we’d all like to know the back story in Houston. Whatever happened he’s proved he can manage in my opinion. And as I typed the voice in my head said, “Unless he’s winning the same way in Detroit.” I don’t think so but I live by Never Say Never.

Senator Robert Nichols announced this week that he will not run for re-election. Nichols is based out of Jacksonville where they have the big tomatoes all over town like our oranges. David Wagstaff, who is from Orange, has already informed me that he is planning to run.
Have a great weekend!
