On Monday the Deweyville Volunteer Fire Dept. was assisted by the Newton County Pct 4 Constables office and Newton County Sheriff’s office with a water rescue. A good Samaritan found a man semi-submerged and barely breathing in a canal off the Sabine River and called 911 according to Constable Howie Wonders. The location was near County Road 4213.
The man, said to be in his sixties, was successfully rescued, taken to the DVFD by Acadian and life flighted to the hospital.
Wonders said he was in a hard to reach area and had to be rescued by boat. As to why he was there, Wonders said he wasn’t sure but thought it could’ve been a medical issue or exhaustion after getting in the water.
Newton Co. Sheriff Colton Havard reiterated what Wonders said about the location. Havard said he thought the man had been swimming but wasn’t sure. The objective was getting him out of the water and to the hospital. Havard said the last update he received was that the man was in stable condition.
