Sheriff Havard’s Report
South Newton County Multi-Jurisdictional Crime Suppression Operation:
On Thursday, June 19, 2025, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, along with several other law enforcement agencies, conducted a multi-jurisdictional crime suppression operation focused on combating illegal narcotics and apprehending individuals with outstanding warrants in South Newton County. Deputies conducted traffic enforcement, vehicle searches, surveillance, and made arrests for probation and parole violations. The goal of these operations is to keep the criminal element guessing as to when they may encounter a high law enforcement presence in Newton County.
Deweyville Parole Violator Arrest:
On Thursday, June 19, 2025, Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office made contact with a white male in the 40000 block of State Highway 87 South, who was identified as James Howard Barnes. A check revealed Barnes to be wanted out of Virgina for a parole violation. Barnes was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Newton County Jail without incident.
Newton County Sheriff’s Office Changes Trustee Uniforms:
There has been a change in the uniform for trustees in the Newton County Jail. Effective immediately, trustees will be dressed in a black and white uniform (pictured below). Newton County residents will see the trustees wearing these uniforms on work crews and around the courthouse. Although we have a thorough selection process, this change is an effort to help staff, and the public differentiate between an inmate assigned to a work program and a high-level offender.
Calls for Service:
We answered 59 calls for service last week and booked 3 individuals into the Newton County Jail. We currently have 29 inmates housed in the following facilities: 5 in Beauregard Parish, 10 in Jasper, and 14 in Newton.
