Tuesday afternoon during heavy winds and some rain, a barge that was pushed onto land lifted because of the high water and set its sight on the docks around the Orange Boat Ramp.
But in a “best case scenario” the barge hit the dock near the ramp doing some damage, but completely avoided the new floating dock. It touched but didn’t damage the dock that extends on the water before coming to a stop on the bank just to the north of the ramp. Witnesses said it missed the other areas by a matter of feet.
The barge was said to be empty. A tugboat was on the scene right at dark to take control of the barge. The barge belongs to West Point. They retrieved it and are working with the city on repairs.
