Busy weekend in Orange County. I even heard someone say there was too much going on. That’s because everyone is trying to get their event in before it gets too damn hot to do anything outside that doesn’t involve water.

The NFL Draft has come and gone and while the Sanders’ family tries to figure out what went wrong, teams passing Shedeur over and over was ratings gold for ESPN. And whoever produced that thing deserves a week off. Cameras all over the world just to announce picks. Cameras in every teams “Draft Room” where front office dudes are now forced to high five and chest bump at a 6th round pick because the cameras are on them. Video on damn near every player drafted. It’s a massive production. And the NFL is far and away the most popular professional sport. So why does the commissioner gets booed every time he steps on the stage? I don’t get it. I would understand booing his bro hugs because they’re ridiculous (LOL). Maybe it’s the same people that destroy their city after winning a championship. That’s like having a favorite movie but booing the lead actor every time you see them.

Speaking of actors, seems like a day doesn’t go by without me seeing or hearing something that reminds me that I’m not young anymore. This weekend actor Al Pacino turned 85 and actress Talia Shire turned 79. Wow. And if that doesn’t blow your hair, they’re both older than Duck Dynasty’s Si Robertson who turned 77.
I know it’s easy to say Pacino’s best movies were either Godfather or Scarface, but I think I have to got go with “Scent of a Woman.” Love that movie. And of course Shire was also in Godfather but we all know her as Rocky’s wife Adrian. I still remember sitting in the theater with James Meaux watching Rocky III when Mickey died. James had to quickly go to the bathroom and admittedly I wiped a tear myself.

Pittsburgh Pirate reliever and BC native Chase Shugart got his first professional win last week. He followed that up with his first professional loss. Listen, I wasn’t a baseball player but I know this, your mental game has to be as strong as your arm if you want to play professional ball. If there’s not a therapist on staff there needs to be. Just this season, Shugart was sent to Triple A in Indianapolis to start the season after he thought he made it to the show. Then he was called up, sent back ,and called up again and we haven’t made it through the first month. That’s pack, plane, different uniform, not know when you’re going to pitch because you’re a reliever. He must be steady because he also added getting married to his plate.
Also former Alabama Tide DB Deionte Thompson, who helped the WOS Mustangs start that four year run to State, has proposed to his fiancé and will be walking down the aisle. Congratulations to the Playmaker. And congrats to another Mustang, Demetrius Hunter. The OL for the Houston Cougars, is graduating college after just three years.

Good luck to Orangefield’s Zach Morrow and LCM’s Dinah Tippins who will be competing at the State Track Meet this week. Morrow will be in the 3A Pole Vault event which could be one of the most competitive events in the meet as all of the vaulters come in over 14 feet. Morrow has had a helluva senior year. He was a big part of the Bobcats success in football and you’d have a hard time finding another young man in the OC who had a better track season.
Tippins is in thanks to the University of Texas having what they call a European oval track which consists of nine lanes instead of the usual eight. The top two places from each of the four regions advance to State. Then the best third place finisher of the four regions gets to advance because of that ninth lane. But when you put her time with the other eight competitors, she’ll go in with the fifth place time so if she runs her best she’ll have a chance to medal. She’s certainly fun to watch.
Two more State Shoutouts. Orangefield’s Lincoln Parks will hit the links in the 3A State Golf Tournament on May 5-6.
And good luck to the Vidor Pirate Players who have advanced to State in One Act Play. Director Stacy Webb has some great kids who will perform “Little Women” on May 19.
