
Virginia Custer, 95, of Mauriceville, Texas, passed away on March 13, 2025.
Visitation will from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, March 16, 2025, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 17, 2025, at St. Maurice Catholic Church in Mauriceville. Officiating will be Father Michael Strother. Entombment will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Orange. There will be a bereavement meal held at St. Francis of Assisi Hall following the service.
Born in Port Arthur, Texas on January 11, 1930, she was the daughter of Andrew Gautreaux and Caroline (Matte) Gautreaux. An unwavering pillar of strength and love, Virginia spent an illustrious 35 years dedicating her professional talents to DuPont, where she worked in payroll. Her tenure at the company exemplified her dedication to her craft and her commitment to those around her. Beyond her career, Virginia was a woman of many passions and interests. She had a remarkable ability to keep her mind sharp, enjoying activities such as crossword puzzles and immersing herself in the world of literature through her love for reading. Her intellectual curiosity reflected a life rich in learning and engagement.
A devout Catholic, Virginia was an active member of St. Maurice Catholic Church for many years. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, and she devoted herself to her church community with deep reverence and commitment.
Her kitchen was a haven of sweet delights, most notably known for her famous peanut butter fudge which became a cherished treat among relatives. Christmas was a time when her skills truly shone, as she beautifully decorated trees and crafted intricate bows that brought joy to her home and the homes of those around her.
Her unique ability to listen and offer comfort allowed her to be seen as a mother figure and a second Nanaw to many, providing solace to friends and family alike throughout her life. Her family was her foremost pride and joy. Second only to God, her love for her family was profound and unwavering. From their perspective, she was born to be a Nanaw, a title that she wore with a distinctive grace and warmth that will forever resonate in their hearts.Virginia’s vibrant spirit extended into her personal life as well, where she was known for her flair for fashion and her love of shopping. Her sense of style was not just a reflection of her personality, but also an expression of the joy she found in life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Caroline Gautreaux; brother, Bobby Gautreaux; and the father of her children, Robert Custer.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Risa Ann McKay and E.J., of Mauriceville and Julie Marie Custer, of Austin; grandchildren, Erin McKay and Uzma, Annah Fisette and Mike, Cade McKay and Rachel, Ethan McKay, and Jacy Fisette and Cory; great-grandchildren, Callum McKay, Griffin McKay, Rosie McKay, and Townes Mangalindan; along with Mark Fisette; longtime friend, Verna Duhon; and numerous other loving family and friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Cade McKay, Ethan McKay, Mike Mangalindan, Cory Reinsch, Richard Duhon, and Ricky Viator.
Virginia’s legacy will live on through the cherished memories and love she imparted to those fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a lasting impact in both her community and the hearts of her loved ones.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Oakwood Manor, as well as Southeast Texas Hospice, especially Yvette Cotton, for the wonderful and loving care provided toward the end of her life.
