The Orangefield Bobcat Varsity Tennis team took to the courts today at the Nederland Tournament. The older Bobcats were looking to build on the success of yesterday‘s Freshmen and JV teams and surpassed those expectations mightily!
Orangefield had 3 athletes win consolation medals starting with Reese Dearing and Gunnar Griffin took consolation in the Boys B Doubles draw. Fellow Sophomore, Cooper Dorman, dropped his first match (8-5) to the eventual champion of the main draw, but rallied to take consolation in Boys B Singles.
Over in Mixed B Doubles, two seniors put together a great tournament with Addi Moore and Matthew Golemon advancing to the finals in the main draw. They lost to a very good Hamshire-Fannett team but did not go down without a fight. Their second place finish was a personal best for both athletes at the varsity level.
In the always competitive Mixed A Doubles, last week’s champs, Ava Walker and Adam Tsan also faced off against a top-notch Hamshire-Fannett team. After two very back-and-forth sets, the Bobcats dropped the match (7-5, 7-5) to finish in second place on the day.
Tournament standouts were without a doubt, Sophomore, Brycen Amy and Senior, Leland Connolly who were playing together for only the second time this season. The two showed some promise after a consolation win last week, but played about as good as they ever have in today’s contest.
The two moved through the main draw with relative ease after picking up wins against East Chambers and Kelly in straight sets.
They then found themselves faced with a finals showdown with a very good Nederland team. The pair dropped a close first set but, rallied to take the ensuing set (6-3) forcing a third set tiebreaker.
Ultimately their opponents prevailed in the tiebreaker, but Brycen and Leland proved they can compete with some of the best in SETX in the A Doubles Division!
With 9 players medaling on the day, the Bobcats put up one of the best showings in recent memory when it comes to competing in a varsity tournament! Their coaches are extremely proud of all the dedication and effort shown program-wide as we hit the halfway mark on our season and cannot wait to hit the courts next week as our JV hosts the Bobcat Classic!
