A record breaking season for the Bridge City Lady Cards came to an end Tuesday in Katy as the Cuero Gobblers pulled away late for a 41-36 win in the 4AD2 Semifinals.
The Lady Cards (35-4) met up with a team that had the same intensity on the defensive side of the ball. In the first quarter, BC couldn’t get a shot off while Cuero missed their first eight attempts that saw the game tied at six after one.
In the second quarter BC had two leads thanks to shots from Kaylee Britten and Mia Sterling but just before the half, Cuero’s leading scorer Arissa Carbonara hit three free throws to give the Gobblers a 14-11 lead. She also committed her third foul just before intermission to give the Cards some hope going into the last two quarters.
Cuero came out in the second half and built their largest lead of the game to that point with a 16-11 advantage. But Carbanaro picked up her fourth foul followed by threes from Britten and Sterling, and then two free throws by Britten to tie it at 19 with 5:15 to play. Whitney Cunningham, who had a fantastic game in her final game as a Cardinal, scored the last four points of the quarter to keep BC in it, down 28-26.
In the fourth Carbanaro fouled out quickly but their other big in the middle, Aubrey Bowles, took over with eight points in the quarter. The Gobblers had their biggest lead at nine with two minutes left and held on for the five point win and their first trip to the state title game. They’ll play Lincoln on Friday after they defeated Glen Rose 39-32.
Cunningham finished with a game high 15 points and nine rebounds. The young Cards, sporting eight freshmen on the roster, will have plenty of experience coming back next season and will look to make another run. The Gobblers started five seniors and have seven on the roster. Good luck to them in San Antonio. Also good luck to Kountze. The Lionettes pummeled Jourdanton 73-37 and will play for the 3AD2 Final against Paradise.
