On Friday, February 21, 2025, Newton County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 9000 block of FM 2626, for a disturbance. Deputies had been trying to locate the suspect, who had a felony warrant for his arrest out of Kansas for aggravated assault. The responding deputy’s preliminary investigation indicated the suspect was hidden inside of a toolbox in the back of a pickup truck. The vehicle was located and the deputy, along with the Newton Police Department, made a traffic stop on US 190. The suspect subsequently pointed a handgun at the officers resulting in the officers shooting and killing the suspect. He’s been identified as 49-year-old Michael Boyd Powers of Bon Wier. The driver of the truck was released from the scene, pending investigation by the Texas Rangers. This was a very sad situation for everyone involved and I stand by the actions of the officers 100%.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office answered 43 calls for service last week and booked 4 individuals into the Newton County Jail. We have 21 in the following jails: 5 in Jasper, 9 in Beauregard Parish and 7 in Newton. I hope everyone has a wonderful week. Don’t hesitate to let us know if we can be of any assistance. The thought for the week: I have not failed; I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.
