Orange County will be building new Points Of Distribution in 2025 after Commissioners Court secured property in all four precincts.
“We were able to secure the funds for this project through a grant so none of the money will be coming from the general fund,” said County Judge John Gothia.
“In the past during disasters, the military or whoever would come in with MRE’s and water and they would set up at area schools, churches and businesses. And we’re appreciative to those who have helped us in the past. But the military may have to leave before we’re ready or the churches and businesses want to get back to business so we wanted to have locations that we could control,” he said.
The buildings will basically be large warehouses with easy access. The county has secured property in Precinct 1 near the Faith United Methodist Church on MLK in Orange. In Prec. 2 the POD will be located near the Mauriceville Heritage Association property and in Prec. 3 near the OC Airport on Hwy. 87. The POD in Prec. 4 will be near the Vidor City Pool off IH-10.
The judge added that they could be used for voting locations, and other county business. They hope to have them ready for the 2025 Hurricane season.
