Riding the wave of back-to-back winning seasons, Lamar University has signed head coach Pete Rossomando to a four-year extension announced Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeff O’Malley Thursday morning.
“We are extremely excited to be making this announcement,” said Director of Athletics Jeff O’Malley. “The direction of the football program has been on an upward trajectory since Coach Rossomando’s hiring. He and his staff have done an amazing job in a short period of time. It’s an understatement to say we’re excited about the future of Lamar Cardinals football with Pete Rossomando at the helm.”
In Rossomando’s first season with the Cardinals, he took a team that had won just five games in the three previous seasons combined and recorded the nation’s fourth-largest single-season turnaround at the NCAA FCS level. The 6-5 campaign marked Lamar’s first winning season since 2018 and just the third since bringing the sport back to Beaumont. The Cardinals remained in the hunt for a conference title until the next to last week of the season.
Proving 2023 was not a fluke, the Cardinals posted a 7-5 season in 2024 again remaining in the fight for a conference title well into the season’s final month. The 7-5 campaign marked the first back-to-back winning seasons for the program since 1966 and 1967.
Lamar’s 13 wins over the previous two seasons equals the best two-year run for the Red and White since the 1973 and 1974.
“I’m very excited that we were able to get a deal done extending my time here in Beaumont building a program to a championship future,” said Rossomando. “I love working with the university, and we have great leadership from the top down. I look forward to continuing working with a great team as we pursue our goals.”
Rossomando’s players have reaped the benefits of his guidance as well. Rossomando has produced 15 all-conference selections, and 11 players have garnered Southland Player of the Week honors, including a school record six consecutive players of the week in 2023.
Rossomando is Lamar’s fourth head coach since the revival of the program for the 2010 season.
