The Bobcats cruised to a 52-22 win over Buna on Thursday night at Cougars Stadium for its seventh straight victory ahead of the bi-district playoffs next week.
Orangefield came out and dominated the game from the start. The Bobcats took the opening kickoff and marched the ball downfield in just four plays as Mason Manning scored his first touchdown of the night on a 8-yard run. The Tyler Butler extra point gave Orangefield an early 7-0 lead.
They added a 35-yard field goal from Butler on the next possession after reaching the Cougars 6-yard line on a 55-yard run by Manning, but failing to capitalize to extend the score, 10-0.
Manning added a 6-yard touchdown run on the Bobcats next possession and, following another Buna punt, he would score his third touchdown of the night on a 3-yard run early in the second quarter. With the Bobcats lead now 24-0, Manning’s night on offense was over.
Jose Lecea would come in for Manning and kept the momentum rolling as he scored on a 2-yard run midway through the second-quarter. Quarterback Carson Gonzalez worked on the passing game late in the quarter and he connected on a 34-yard catch and run by receiver Kyler Green for the score and 38-0 lead at the half.
Lecea added another touchdown to start the third quarter for the Bobcats as he rumbled 47 yards for his second touchdown of the night to extend the Orangefield advantage, 45-0.
Buna scored two touchdowns on its next two possessions as running back Tanner Crane scored on runs of 1-yard and 9-yards, respectively. The Cougars converted one two-point attempt but failed on the next to trim the Bobcats advantage, 45-14.
Orangefield running back Gage Lucas got some work in during the fourth quarter and made the most of his opportunity as he capped off the final Orangefield drive of the night with a 10-yard run to put Orangefield ahead, 52-14.
Crane added his third touchdown of the night, this time a 4-yard run with 3:21 remaining. The two-point conversion made the final score 52-22 Bobcats.
The Bobcats, which have won seven consecutive games, had 331 total yards of offense on Thursday night, as Orangefield rushed for 267 yards and passed for 64 yards in the game.
Manning powered the Bobcats rushing attack three touchdowns on eight carries for 71 yards, but Lecea lead all rushers on the night with 112 yards on 11 rushes and two touchdowns. Lucas had 49 yards on nine totes.
Gonzalez passed for 64 yards on the night, while completing six of 12 passes for one touchdown. He carried the ball four times for 18 yards.
The Orangefield defense held the Cougars offense to just 165 total yards for the game with the bulk of it coming late in the second-half of the game.
As the champs of District 10-3A Division 1, Orangefield (8-2, 6-0) will be the No. 1 seed from the district for the playoffs and will play the No. 4 seed from District 9-3A, which is still to be determined.
