Lamar State College Orange hosted a grand opening ceremony for the newly constructed Academic Building on Wednesday, November 6 at the campus in downtown Orange. The 55,000 square foot, $38 million dollar facility is the largest space on campus and houses 8 state of the art labs, 8 classrooms, 2 computer labs, student commons areas, faculty and information technology offices. Students will begin attending classes in the Academic Building next semester in the Spring of 2025.
Outside the front of the building is a lighted art piece created by R&R Studios. R&R is the collaborative office of artists and architects Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt, whose practice weaves together visual arts, design, architecture, and the city.
It’s called We Are The Light, and it is described by the artists as a “social sculpture.” Consisting of eight custom fabricated light fixtures arranged in a circular pattern. They describe the work as a “place of encounter” that breaks down “the barriers between contemporary art and everyday life.”
