Robert Clyde Hood, age 85, of San Antonio, formerly of Orange, Texas, passed peacefully on Saturday morning, July 20, 2024.
Bob was born in Dallas, Texas on September 21,1938. He grew up in Dallas and then attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. While at Texas Tech, he met and married his wife of 65 years, Kyle Thornton Hood. He participated in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at both the high school and university levels. Bob then served in the United States Army on active duty as a second lieutenant before ultimately settling in Orange, Texas.
Bob was a chemical engineer in the petrochemical industry for his entire career, working primarily in the area around Orange but also serving for four years as a plant manager in Ontario, Canada. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, and bridge player. He was a loyal fan of his hometown Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Bob’s most dedicated allegiance was to the Houston Astros and after winning their first World Series Title in 2017 in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, he said “they owed me one”!
Bob and Kyle lived in Orange, Texas for many years, raising their two children, Keith and Diana. Bob was very active in his church and his community. He taught Sunday School classes and served in leadership roles at First Presbyterian Church of Orange. He was active with various organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Boy Scouts of America, Sunset Grove Country Club, and the Nature Classroom at Shangri La Botanical Gardens. He also served the community with roles in the City Council of Pinehurst, the local YMCA, the Heritage Center Board, and as a girl’s high school volleyball official. He also provided volunteer hours to help prepare tax returns for those in need of assistance. After retirement, Bob and Kyle remained in Orange until moving to Blue Skies of San Antonio, Texas in early 2018.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Godfrey Hood and Martha Louise Fugate Hood. He was also preceded by the death of his sister, Martha Maedelle Hood Morgan, and her husband Robert Sears Morgan. He is survived by his wife, Kyle Thornton Hood, of Blue Skies San Antonio, son Robert Keith Hood DDS and wife Laura Lyle Hood of Aransas Pass, and daughter Diana Henderson Brown MD and husband Patrick Brown MD of San Antonio.
Bob was immensely proud of his seven grandchildren, all of whom survive him: Robert Lyle Hood, PhD of San Antonio, Christopher Brian Henderson and wife Karina Garcia of San Antonio, Josie Katherine Hood of Austin, Shelby Katherine Henderson of San Antonio, Neale Thornton “Leroy” Hood of Tempe, Arizona, Alexander Philip Hood of Waco, and Brooks Patrick Brown of San Antonio.
A memorial service will be held at Blue Skies (West) Protestant Chapel in San Antonio on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 10 am with a reception to follow.
