The Woodville Eagles held off a tenacious Orangefield Bobcats squad to claim a 19-7 victory on Friday night at F.L. McClain Stadium in Orangefield.
The Eagles started the night off with a touchdown on its first drive of the game as Woodville moved the ball 68-yards in nine plays, while consuming 4:26 of the clock with a heavy dose of running. However, it was a spectacular 33-yard pass from quarterback Ralon Williams to receiver Ty’Marion Walker to put the Eagles ahead 6-0 following the failed two point attempt.
Both teams exchanged turnovers and possessions until the second quarter, when the Bobcats offense finally started to click.
The drive started at the Bobcats 47 yard line and consumed over 6:30 of the clock as it took the Orangefield offense 12 plays to find the end zone. With second and goal at the 2-yard line, running back Kane Smith found the end zone. Following the Ty Butler extra point, the Bobcats took a 7-6 lead.
The Eagles quickly reminded everyone just how quickly they can score as it took the Woodville offense just two plays and 58 seconds to find the end zone again as the Williams to Walker connection found success again on a deep 51-yard touchdown pass. Following the failed two-point attempt, Woodville was back on top of Orangefield, 12-7, at halftime.
The Eagles defense clamped down on the Bobcats offense in the second-half and held Orangefield to 200 total yards for the game, while getting three takeaways in the contest as well.
The Woodville offense had 307 total yards of offense for the game with quarterback Williams throwing for 134 yards on 11 completions, while adding 60 yards rushing on 12 carries. Walker had six receptions for 127 yards on the night, including three touchdowns as he and Williams connected on a 24-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter and a 19-7 lead following the extra point.
The Bobcats running back trio of Mason Manning, Kane Smith and Fernando Sandoval-Rodriguez kept attacking the Eagles defense but could not bust loose for the big yards. Manning lead all Bobcats rushers with 80 yards on 18 carries.
Orangefield mounted a late push for the end zone but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
The Bobcats (1-3) begin District 10-3A Div. I play next Friday as Orangefield travels to Buna to take on the Cougars. Buna (3-1) beat Kountze 49-14 on Friday in its final non-district contest.
